What is a Vegetarian Diet and Is It Ok To Be On When Diabetic?

Vegetarianism refers to the diet that excludes animal products that are loaded with saturated fats and other high calorie foods. A vegetarian diet includes foods that give more of the vital vitamins and minerals and so it gives the diabetics a better chance to manage their blood sugar levels. Therefore a vegetarian diet includes more of whole grains, fruits and vegetables and legumes.

The high content of fibers in the vegetarian diet is extremely beneficial for a diabetic person as it curbs the craving of having more food. Fiber is also very beneficial for those who are on the borderline of diabetes or should we say, are pre-diabetic. Blood sugar levels can be controlled by high fiber diet and it also helps in lowering cholesterol levels thereby reducing the risk of heart diseases.

Researches do not suggest that converting to vegetarianism would cure diabetes, but it surely is better than a non-vegetarian diet which increases the risk of diabetes related diseases like heart diseases, renal diseases and other problems like weight gain. Some diets include eggs and dairy products, where as the strictest of these diets, the vegan diet excludes all such things and consists only of food products that are cholesterol free and low in fat. Weight management through vegetarian diet is also helpful for the diabetics and the body becomes more responsive to insulin.
