How is Diabetic Ketoacidosis Treated?

Diabetic ketoacidosis should be treated as soon as possible for the best possible outcome.  The sooner the patient is treated the better the outcome.  The treatment for this condition should be sough out immediately and may require hospitalization if it is very severe.  Insulin and fluids are given through the veins and the patient has to be monitored closely.  The electrolytes in the blood need to be brought into balance and it can take up to several days to bring blood sugar levels back into a safe balance as well.  Fluid levels need to be brought back up to the safe range also

The best treatment for diabetic ketoacidosis is prevention.  The diabetic needs to monitor their blood glucose daily and not allow it to get in the unsafe range.  Diabetics also need to guard against dehydration.  Severe infection or other illnesses can put a diabetic at risk for this condition as well.
