There have often been misconceptions regarding sugar or to say sweet fruits and diabetes. It is believed that diabetics should not consume sweet fruits because of their high sugar content. True, some fruits are sweeter or contain more sugar than others but that surely does not mean that diabetics cannot have those fruits. What affects the blood sugar level is the total amount of carbohydrates and not what the source of that carbohydrate is. So what really have to be taken into consideration are the amount of the fruit and the frequency of the intake. In fact, diabetics are encouraged to take in more fruits than other processed foods that are high in carbohydrates and sugar. A normal lifestyle is an essential requirement of not only diabetics but each individual. Therefore as fruits contain natural fiber, enzymes, vitamins and other essential nutrients they must be a part of the diet. The relation between sugars and insulin levels is the root cause of the assumption that sweet fruits are harmful for the diabetics. This is because fruits are broken down or metabolized by the natural insulin produced by the body. Some fruits that have a high glycemic index cannot be easily metabolized. Therefore such fruits must be taken in moderation. |
