Are there any Diabetes Support Groups?

Yes, of course! There are plenty of support groups for people with diabetes. Depending on the country, patients can get in touch with both national and local support groups, and it is highly recommended that they do. Diabetic patients have to undertake massive amounts of precaution – they must keep track of all the food they eat, all the medicine they take and regularly check their cholesterol and glucose levels.

Attempting to bring such a drastic change in the lifestyle will overwhelm just about anyone. Having a support group relieves the pressure a great deal. These groups provide information, so that the patient can easily find out what they need to know about diet sheets, diet plans, glucose monitors, and learn the tips and tricks to managing diabetes. They provide motivation to the patients by comparing notes – who lost the most weight, which had the lowest cholesterol level – and so on. Finally, the support group provides patients with people who understand exactly what they are going through, who sympathize with them, and give them emotional support.

There are support groups for different types of diabetes, for children with diabetes, and for the families and friends of diabetics. There are even support groups online. These groups put diabetic patients in contact with other diabetic patients – letting them know that they are not alone.
