The Myths About Diabetes


There are many myths about diabetes, and each can confuse the person that is new in dealing with diabetes for themselves or a child.

    • Diabetes can be caught from someone that has it: this is false, diabetes is the inability of the pancreases to process insulin that is produced by beta cells.
    • Juvenile diabetes is something that children will outgrow: this is false, children normally are diagnosed with type I diabetes, which is the insulin form of diabetes and is caused by the destruction of beta cells in the pancreas.
    • Insulin is a cure for diabetes: this is false, insulin does not cure diabetes, it is used as a medication to control blood sugar levels in the normal range.
    • Diabetic pills are insulin in an oral form: this is not true and is a myth, the pills that are prescribed for diabetes assist the body in the ability to use insulin better.
    • Children with diabetes have a restricted lifestyle: that is not true, children with insulin diabetes need exercise and a balanced diet, as this can lower the blood sugar level.
    • Women with diabetes are unable to have children: this is a myth, women with diabetes with the help of medical technology are able to have a normal pregnancy and continue to have normal range blood sugar levels.
