What are Diabetes Meals Like?

Diabetes meals are healthy and are classified as “eating whole.”  Preparing diabetes meals may seem like it takes a lot of work but these meals are essential to help control blood sugar levels.

Healthy meals for diabetes typically consist of about 300 to 400 calories for breakfast, around 500 calories for lunch and about 600 calories for dinner.  The meals are made with reduced amounts of carbohydrates, low in fat and are low in sodium.  Whole grains and dairy are included and a serving of a high quality protein is in each meal as well as fruit.

For instance you can have 1 slice of whole grain toast, 1 egg, ½ of oatmeal, ½ cup of skim milk and a half of a banana for breakfast.  A lunch meal includes something like 1 cup of vegetable soup, a few whole wheat crackers, turkey sandwich on whole grain bread and a small piece of fruit.  A dinner meal could be 1 broiled skinless chicken breast, ½ cup of brown rice, 1 cup of tossed green salad with fresh carrots, 1 whole wheat dinner roll and a serving of canned fruit.  Each meal should also include a glass of water.
