What is There To Know about Diabetic Ketoacidosis?

Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA) is a dangerous condition which results from a lack of insulin in the blood. Without enough insulin, the body cells cannot use the sugar (glucose) in the blood for energy. However, the cells must still fulfill their energy requirements somehow. So, they break down fats. The result? Although the breakdown releases energy, toxic acids known as ketones are also produced and released into the bloodstream.

Who’s at risk from developing diabetic ketoacidosis? It usually happens to people suffering from type 1 diabetes; however, type 2 diabetics may also develop this serious condition. More specifically, DKA occurs if blood sugar levels higher than 240 mg/dl persist for some time. On the contrary, it may also occur during severe periods of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar).

Since severe conditions of DKA can lead to coma or even death, diabetics must regularly check their blood sugar level to make sure it remains within safe levels. In addition, they need to be wary of the following symptoms:

  1. Nausea and vomiting
  2. Abdominal Pain
  3. Extreme thirst
  4. Frequent urination
  5. Fatigue
  6. Appetite Loss
  7. Rapid Breathing
  8. Fruity breath odor

Also, a surefire sign of DKA – high ketone level in urine – can now be detected at home through urine testing kits. Immediate treatment is required if a person is diagnosed with this symptom.
