What Else is there to Know About Hypoglycemia?

Hypoglycemia is the medical term for someone whose glucose (blood sugar) level is too low. This condition can be caused by the body uses up the sugar too quickly or when too much insulin is present. A low blood sugar due to too much insulin can occur naturally by the pancreas secreting too much insulin or from artificial insulin such as that of an injection.

When a person exercises, the body will use up more sugar. If the person does not eat enough to compensate for this, then they are at risk for hypoglycemia. When a person with diabetes generally does not eat enough the body will run out of sugar, thus causing hypoglycemia. This is one of the many reasons that it's important to eat full, healthy meals.

Symptoms of hypoglycemia include confusion, cold sweats, fatigue, blurred vision, blackouts, nervousness, rapid heart rate, and trembling. If any of these symptoms appear, it is important for the person to get food. Drinking orange juice is a quick way for a person to keep their blood sugar high enough to stay alert enough to find something to eat to keep their blood sugar high enough. It is important for those who experience hypoglycemia to discuss this with their physician.
