What Does Diabetes Insipidus Do?

Diabetes insipidus causes frequent urination and in most cases a strong thirst. Generally patients may louse significant amounts of water due to frequent bathroom trips caused by this problem. As such patients often feel the continued need to keep drinking large amounts of water. While this is a rare disease it is most common in children and may cause them to also have a fever, begin to vomit or have continual diarrhea. Steps should be taken to ensure that enough water is consumed as dehydration may occur quickly.

Diabetes insipidus shouldn't be confused with the commonly known Diabetes melitus which is caused by lack of insulin. Diabetes insipidus is a completely different kind of sickness and should be treated as such. Diabetes insipidus is usually caused by the pituitary gland no longer being able to store a chemical called ADH. ADH literally tells the kidneys how concentrated urine should be and is released by the pulmonary gland at differing intervals. The hormone ADH is made in the hypothalamus (at the base of the brain) and the lack of the hormone in the bloodstream is usually the cause of diabetes insipidus. A deficiency of ADH is usually treated by taking desmopressin either by injection, nasal spray or pill on a daily basis.
