What are the Symptoms of High Blood Sugar?

Hyperglycemia, or high blood sugar, is a temporary condition which is caused by high glucose levels in the blood. It is one of the most common conditions diabetic patients have to deal with regularly. However, since the persistence of hyperglycemia for several hours can lead to dehydration and other severe conditions such as ketones in the urine, it is important for patients to be aware of the symptoms beforehand.
Here are a few of the most common symptoms:

  1. Frequent Urination: When the blood glucose level becomes too high, the kidneys cannot reabsorb the excess glucose that passes to the kidneys. As a result, the excess glucose dissolves in a larger quantity of water and passes out as urine.
  1. Thirst: This results from dehydration caused by frequent urination.

  1. Fatigue: This happens because enough glucose cannot reach the body cells and fulfill their energy requirements.
  1. Weight Loss: Since glucose contains calories, frequent urination leads to a significant loss in calories, which, in turn, leads to weight loss. It may also lead to increased appetite.

Other symptoms of hyperglycemia include itchy skin, dry mouth and blurry vision. However, one of the biggest challenges with hyperglycemia is that, in most cases, it has no symptoms. That’s why people with diabetes must check their glucose levels before every meal and at bedtime.
