What is a Gestational Diabetes Diet?

Gestational Diabetes diet is a diet that one must follow when they are pregnant and have developed diabetes.  Having high blood sugar levels can be very dangerous for you and your baby.  Eating a balanced nutritional diet is more important than ever throughout your pregnancy if you have developed gestational diabetes.  Most doctors highly recommend a special diet designed by a registered dietician for their patients who are pregnant and have diabetes.

The amount of calories that are eaten every day should be recorded.  All sugary foods should be avoided as well as any other foods that trigger an increase in blood sugar like potato chips and other types of junk foods.  The most important thing to remember when following a gestational diabetes diet is to eat a diet that includes a healthy balance of lean protein, healthy fats, complex carbohydrates, dairy products and whole grains.  A skilled dietician can design a diet plan for pregnant women that will meet their nutritional needs and the nutritional needs of the developing infant.
