What is Gestational Diabetes?

Gestational Diabetes is a condition that happens during pregnancy, typically around the 28th week or later. Many pregnant women are diagnosed each year with gestational diabetes. If you have never been diagnosed with diabetes, but have a high blood sugar or glucose level while you are pregnant, then chances are good that your doctor will diagnose you with this condition.

The reason that women get gestational diabetes depends on a number of factors. If during your pregnancy, your body cannot make and use the insulin that it needs to keep both you and your unborn child healthy, then a diagnosis of gestational diabetes is imminent. The extra hormones from your placenta, which help your baby to develop at a healthy pace, can cause this condition in many women.

It is important to note that this condition typically goes away after your baby is born. Of course, those who have had gestational diabetes in past pregnancies are far more likely to contract it during future pregnancies. It often uncovers medical conditions in women that lead to a diagnosis of Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes. A family history of diabetes can also lead to the condition. It is important during your pregnancy that you eat a healthy diet and get plenty of rest and exercise in order to combat the problems that cause gestational diabetes.
