Insulin, like other proteins is made of a specific kind of acid found generally called amino acid. Insulin is considered to be a hormone and is created inside your pancreas by cells called beta cells or islets. While almost every animal has its own form of insulin each is unique structurally, however pig insulin is extremely close to that of human insulin.
Insulin is composed of 51 amino acids and it is used as a metabolic control panel (metabolism controlling instrument if you will). It is used to control signals in other body systems and is used by the body to create a few other proteins. Insulin is considered to be a peptide hormone since it is injected into the blood stream by the body.
In animals with a spine (vertebrates) insulin is extremely similar, being closest in that of pigs. However the insulin of other creatures such as fish and reptiles is effective enough to be used in the human body. Synthetic insulin is creating using recombinant DNA technology and recently researchers have been able to introduce genes into plants that enable the plant to produce insulin.
