What are the Symptoms of Diabetes Insipidus?

The symptoms of diabetes insipidus can be more severe in some people than they are in others.  Some people can become extremely dehydrated.  Electrolyte imbalance is common when there is excessive fluid loss.  Some common symptoms that people experience when they have this disease are

  • Extreme thirst
  • Excessive urine output
  • Unexplained weakness
  • Lethargy
  • Muscle aches and pains
  • Excessive irritability
  • Nervousness
  • Watery, clear, odorless urine
  • Dry skin, especially the hands
  • Constipation

The symptoms of diabetes insipidus and the dehydration it creates can often cause people with this disease to seek medical treatment.  Blood tests are done to measure the concentration of sodium in the blood and urine samples are taken to determine the levels of ADH when diagnosing this disease.  If you are experiencing excessive urine output and extreme thirst you should go to the doctor for a medical evaluation.
