Are There Complications with Diabetes?

There are all kinds of complications associated with diabetes.  The most common complications that occur because of diabetes are retinopathy, nephropathy, neuropathy, arteriosclerosis, and heart disease.  Patients with diabetes can cause digestive disorders as well.  Other complications associated with diabetes include erectile dysfunction and other sexual disorders. 

Oral complications of diabetes can lead to periodontal disease.  This is a disease of the gums that causes tooth loss.  In fact, 30% of the people who have diabetes and who are over 19 years of age also have periodontal disease.  Lower extremity infections occur quite frequently.  Amputations of the limbs may be necessary because of nerve damage.

Diabetes can even reactivate tuberculosis.  Complications involving influenza and pneumonia are common.

Complications of diabetes during pregnancy can cause congenital malformations of the baby that can result in death of the newborn.  Maintaining good control over what sugar levels is extremely important because of the frequency of medical complications that occur in people who have type I and type II diabetes.
