Are Carbs Unhealthy When You Have Diabetes? |
Carbohydrates or Carbs as we better know them are treated as culprits for quite a few things, diabetes being one of them. But you must understand that Carbs are not the cause of diabetes and have nothing to do with leading to diabetes but, certainly when you have diabetes, they are concerned with everything. Again eating too many harmful Carbs may increase the chances of developing diabetes, indirectly, but in the sense that if with eating Carbs you follow a poor diet pattern, do not exercise and become over weight. Type 2 diabetes can be attributed to obesity, so eating a high carb diet might lead to diabetes to some extent. So the question whether the Carbs are unhealthy when diabetic still remains unanswered. Answering it simply, we can say that although Carbs are essential for the body the amount that is needed by each individual varies and hence this must be given due consideration. The factors on which the carbohydrate requirement of the body depends are the amount of calories needed by the body, the exercise or physical activity levels and certain medical conditions. Therefore a good diabetic eating plan must include eating good Carbs and eliminate Carbs that are unhealthy for the body. Usually such unhealthy Carbs contain more of sugars and empty calories. So the Carbs containing good nutritional value must be included in the diet if diabetic and that too up to the prescribed limit by your doctor. |
