What is Brittle Diabetes?

Brittle Diabetes is a term frequently used to describe uncontrolled type 1 diabetes. People with this condition often experience sporadic glucose levels ranging from hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) to hyperglycemia (high blood sugar). The results of both of these conditions can be extreme and hard to control.

Brittle Diabetes can be caused by one or all of the following: slow stomach emptying, drug related problems, hormonal malfunctions, problems absorbing insulin, thyroid problems, depression, hyperactivity and/or stress. The effects of brittle diabetes may make it hard for the person experiencing it to do regular activities or to enjoy daily life.

While less than 1% of people who have type 1 diabetes experience brittle diabetes its effects can be traumatic for both the parson experiencing it and for the friends and family of the person. People who experience frequent amounts of stress or who are often depressed will be at a much higher risk than those who don't experience them very frequently.
